Au Pair as a Two-Way Chinese Language Exchange: Learning Beyond the Classroom
In an increasingly globalized world, language learning is no longer confined to textbooks or classrooms. One of the most effective and immersive ways to learn a language is through daily life—and this is where the au pair exchange model stands out. While au pair programs are often associated with childcare and cultural exchange, they can also function as a powerful Chinese language exchange, benefiting both international au pairs and Chinese host families.
More Than Childcare: A Living Language Exchange
At its core, an au pair exchange is built on mutual benefit. International au pairs live with a host family, support daily family life, and help create a foreign-language environment for children. In return, they receive accommodation, cultural immersion, and language learning opportunities.
In China, this model works especially well as a dual-language exchange. Au pairs provide children with a natural English-speaking environment—through everyday conversations, reading English books together, and occasionally helping with homework—while the au pairs themselves are fully immersed in Chinese daily life. From mealtime conversations to navigating the city, learning Chinese becomes a lived experience rather than a formal lesson.

A Structured and Supported Exchange in Chengdu
Our program focuses on au pair exchanges between international au pairs and Chinese families, primarily in Chengdu, one of China’s most livable and culturally rich cities. To date, we have successfully supported over 200 Chinese families and au pairs, ensuring that both sides benefit from a safe, well-organized, and meaningful exchange.
Au pairs work no more than 35 hours per week, focusing mainly on communication-based activities with children rather than formal teaching. This allows the experience to remain cultural and educational rather than purely work-oriented.
Learning Chinese Through Real Life—With Professional Support
What makes this exchange especially effective for Chinese language learning is the level of support provided. Au pairs do not have to navigate China alone. The program covers airfare, visa costs, insurance, and includes Chinese language courses, helping au pairs build a strong foundation alongside real-world practice.
In addition, the program offers:
- 24-hour online support to resolve any issues quickly
- Assistance in communication between au pairs and host families
- Group events for au pairs at least once every two months, creating a community and shared learning environment
This structure ensures that even first-time travelers to China can focus on cultural exchange and language learning without unnecessary stress.
Cultural Immersion with Comfort and Balance
Host families provide au pairs with an independent bedroom and three meals a day, ensuring privacy and comfort. Au pairs also receive at least 1,500 RMB in monthly pocket money, 1.5 days off per week, and three additional vacation days every three months. This balance of responsibility and free time allows au pairs to explore China, practice Chinese in social settings, and deepen their cultural understanding.
Combining language study with Internships Abroad
For those who want to take their experience a step further, a local internship can be an excellent way to study Chinese abroad. Internships offer exposure to professional Chinese environments, allowing participants to learn industry-specific vocabulary while gaining international work experience. This creates a well-rounded approach to language learning—blending home, social, and workplace immersion.
Who Thrives in This Exchange?
The program is designed for au pairs aged 18 to 28 who are polite, caring, and genuinely enjoy spending time with children. Being active, talkative, and patient is essential—not only for helping children improve their English, but also for making the most of daily language exchange within the family.
A Win-Win Language Experience
Using the au pair model as a Chinese language exchange transforms learning into something organic and human. Children gain confidence in English through daily exposure, while au pairs develop real-world Chinese skills that no classroom alone can provide. Supported by professional training, ongoing assistance, and a strong community, this exchange becomes more than a program—it becomes a life experience.
For those seeking meaningful cultural immersion, language growth, and genuine human connection, the au pair exchange in China—especially when combined with internships—offers an ideal path to studying Chinese abroad.
